We’re interested in the views of the industry and wider business community on different approaches to domestic account to account real-time payments.

Specifically, we’re looking for organisations with recent and relevant experience in the delivery or operation of real-time payments capabilities to participate in a market information gathering exercise (MIG). (Please note that this is not a request for proposal or procurement exercise and no decision has been made by Payments NZ to implement real-time capabilities in the domestic payments system.)

The information provided will inform the strategic roadmap we’re currently developing for modernising New Zealand’s payments system.

Why are we doing this?

Following the release of our Payments Modernisation Plan (PMP) discussion document last year, we received feedback which identified real-time payments as a key building block towards modernising New Zealand’s payments system. This aligns with a global trend towards real-time payment infrastructures and capabilities. We’re now seeking input through this MIG to further understand what real-time payments could look like for New Zealand and if, and how, real-time payments could fit into our strategic roadmap.

What type of information are we seeking?

We’re looking for recommendations on potential approaches, design and delivery considerations, and business models for real-time payments.
