Two months to go until sunset date for PCI 4.x EFTPOS devices

3 Mar 2026

Payments NZ, the governing body for payment systems in Aotearoa New Zealand, is reminding the industry that EFTPOS devices using the PCI 4.x security standard must be replaced by 30 April 2026 – two months away.

Remaining devices will be non-compliant and subject to disconnection from the network after 30 April.

The sunset date was first published and communicated to industry in 2017, giving merchants, vendors and resellers significant time to prepare.

Jamie Wood, General Manager of Clearing Systems at Payments NZ, says businesses that haven’t already confirmed their upgrade plans need to act now.

“We know that banks, vendors and resellers have been working hard to support merchants with this transition. We’re now in the final push to make sure nobody gets left behind,” says Wood.

“Keeping the EFTPOS network aligned with the latest security standards helps protect consumers and keep the risk of card fraud low. This is especially important as security risks in retail payments keep evolving.

“We’re grateful for the effort so far from industry to get 4.x devices replaced. We’ll be keeping up contact with banks, vendors and resellers over the next two months to support the last stages of this phaseout.

“Merchants who have older devices should contact their vendor or reseller now, so they can continue transacting with confidence beyond April.”
