2022 Environmental Scan Report

7 Oct 2022

As part of our work with the industry to ensure Aotearoa New Zealand is well-prepared for the evolving future of payments, we conduct a full environmental scan every two years which looks at global and local trends likely to impact our payments ecosystem.

Our 2022 scan shows a significant shift in the themes we touch on in our 2021 scan. This year we have introduced six new themes impacting the global payments ecosystem that reflect the current broadening landscape of payment developments. Our new themes have been introduced due to the overlap and convergence we noticed taking place while we were preparing our 2021 Environmental Scan.

The 2022 scan highlights the proliferation of digital payment solutions that are increasingly embedded into other digital offerings. We’ve also noticed a trend for global governments to focus on creating digital infrastructures and policies that support country-specific ambitions to become world class digital nations. There’s also an intensified policy focus on addressing financial inclusion and protecting vulnerable consumers.

This year, we have also introduced a section in the scan looking at key payments and other related developments in Aotearoa. These developments are in step with the rest of the world, which demonstrates that the work being done by the ecosystem here in Aotearoa continues to head in the right direction.
