One week to go before deadline for 4.x EFTPOS terminals

23 Apr 2026

A nationwide phase-out of EFTPOS terminals using older security standards is nearly complete, with just one week remaining before the final deadline for affected devices.

From next Thursday 30 April, any remaining devices using the PCI 4.x security standard will be non-compliant and subject to disconnection from the payments network.

Payments NZ, which governs the lifecycle for EFTPOS devices in Aotearoa New Zealand, says the industry has made strong progress on phasing out older devices, and the focus is now on reaching a small number of merchants yet to upgrade.

“We’ve been in regular contact with banks, vendors and resellers over the past year to support a smooth transition from 4.x terminals to more secure devices,” says Jamie Wood, General Manager Clearing Systems at Payments NZ.

“We originally announced this deadline in 2017 so there has been plenty of time to prepare and almost all merchants have upgraded well ahead of time.

“I’d encourage any business that’s unsure about their devices to talk to their hardware provider now and make sure they’ll still have EFTPOS available when they need it.

“Nobody wants to be caught out by disconnection so the best time to reach out is now, before any disruption happens,” adds Wood.

The deadline is part of an industry lifecycle which ensures that the EFTPOS network operates to the latest security standards, keeping the risk of card fraud low.

“Delivering these upgrades is a collective effort and one that helps to protect a critical network for consumers and businesses,” says Wood.

“I’d like to thank merchants, terminal vendors and resellers across Aotearoa for their efforts.”
