Payments NZ welcomes the Reserve Bank of New Zealand – Te Pūtea Matua consultation on the future of Aotearoa New Zealand's payments system.
For 15 years, Payments NZ has worked closely with industry, government and regulators to help shape and support our nation’s payments ecosystem.
This collaborative approach has underpinned the safe movement of approximately $8.6 trillion in payments annually across Aotearoa and helped progress key modernisation initiatives across the sector.
The payments system of Aotearoa is trusted, secure and highly reliable, providing the foundation for everyday economic activity across the country.
At the same time, customer expectations, technology and global payments infrastructure continue to evolve.
“We welcome the opportunity to have a national conversation about how Aotearoa builds on its strengths and continues to modernise for the future and agree that a modern payment system requires a clear regulatory framework and close collaboration between government, industry and payment system users,” said Payments NZ Chief Executive Steve Wiggins.
Payments NZ has worked with industry for several years to progress modernisation initiatives, including open banking standards, cleared funds, ISO 20022 migration, SBI365 and the development of a long-term vision for next generation payments.
“We look forward to engaging constructively in the consultation process and helping shape a payments system that remains trusted, resilient, innovative and fit for the future of Aotearoa,” added Mr Wiggins.
